nice little netbook for a bit more money September 6, 2010 pjbaird 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
While higher priced than other netbooks, worth the extra cost. The AMD dual processor is considerably faster than the Intel Atom, so fast I'm rarely noticing any speed degradation from a typical dual or quad core intel or Mac desktop in every day use. Was also pleasantly surprised by the video abilities... 720P streams over the internet without a hitch, and World of Warcraft plays full screen with moderate video settings at 20-30 FPS, which is more than adequate.
The keyboard area is a bit garish... an unfortunate look, but I got used to it. The design is very good.. one of the best trackpads and button placements and feel I've noticed on a netbook. The weight (barely over 3lbs) is great, the red cover kind of cool. Battery life is where you really take a hit, compared to most netbooks.. 3.5-4.5 hours, so you don't want to use this off a charger all day.
The screen is very clear and bright.. you definitely need young eyes to read some web pages on this, but that's a function of the screen size in general and could be fixed by zooming in and changing resolutions.
Definitely a good netbook.. for $100 more than a typical netbook you get WAYYY more processing and video power, a bigger screen, and a better designed keyboard/mouse. I recommend for others.
Great but whacked once with the ugly stick September 2, 2010 MommyDearestMwaa (Los Angeles, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I agree that for the money, it's a great computer and better than anything out there. It's a bit slow for me though. I've been working with a 4-year old Toshiba laptop that sputters and clicks but I don't feel any noticeable difference in processr speed with the t215. Perhaps I'm too impressed with the speed of that 10 inch Pad or my husband's Dell, but I'm not complaining. It's good... but if you want fast speed (I did upgrade the memory, btw), like switch-it-on-and-!POW!-internet-connection, it's not here.
Also, whoever decided to continue the weave texture from the top to the base should be figuratively boob-punched. It's hideous. The silver plastic base (fingerprint proof, schmingerhaint froof) alone would be hideous too, btw, Toshiba design team. Just use black plastic. Please. It's a nightmare whenever it's open. Actually, the nightmare is knowing I have to see the base when I open up my laptop. Once it's open, it's just a tragedy. My three year old son likes it. So, naturally, I strongly suspect old people might think it's snazzy, too. It's just SUCH A SHAME.
Excellent Netbook for Linux August 30, 2010 Michael Paric (Benicia, CA United States) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
After much research and trying netbooks with Linux pre-installed, I ordered the Toshiba to replace my broken Eee1000. Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 was installed via USB stick (from the first boot; didn't even get to a Windows screen), reformatting the entire drive to completely remove all traces of Windows and Toshiba partitions. After installing the Ubuntu "Restricted" package (this installs all the essential proprietary programs like Flash, mp3 support and other codecs), Skype, Chromium and Compiz Extra Plugins from the Software Center, everything just worked. I had no trouble connecting to various wireless access points, conducting video calls via Skype or watching YouTube videos. Performance even with just the installed 2GB is very good. I haven't tried the HDMI-out although the the VGA-out works well with external projectors. I gave the Toshiba 4 stars due to lack of Bluetooth and "only" 4 hours of battery life, however I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a well designed netbook on which to install Linux. (Bonus - the Windows 7 and other stickers on the palm rests come off easily so remove them, put an Ubuntu sticker in their place and it looks like it came from the factory that way!)
All that we expected August 17, 2010 Tobyman 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
If Quality, Speed and Memory is what you want you will love this Toshiba with its 11.5 screen. I looked at them all and compared what was being offered with price being second or third on the list. This is no cheap machine, but Quality it is. I up-graded ram to 4 gigs as past reviewers had sugested. Its a slick looking LED monitor, great picture.
Superb product August 16, 2010 Arno 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I had been looking for a portable laptop for a while now and eventually settled on this based on the price and size of the unit. If you're looking for something with enough power to do almost any standard tasks on it bar messing around with massive spread sheets, CAD work or intense gaming (though I have had no troubles playing Starcraft 2) then I thoroughly recommend this laptop.
Again the only gripe that could be found would be the battery life (but for the power and size of the unit it's to be expected. Also it comes with quite a bit of bloatware but that's nothing that wasn't easily fixed by a fun deletion run.
The omission of an optical drive really hasn't been an issue so far as most software is downloadable nowadays anyway.
The keyboard doesn't feel cramped at all and the multi touch capabilities of the touchpad are a very nice addition which just adds to the overall crisp feeling of the laptop.
The display is much better than I expected with a fairly high resolution it gives very good movie watching options, and the on board speakers though quite don't give terrible sound quality and are sufficient for most viewing.
Overall if you're looking for an inexpensive laptop that can be walked around without it feeling like a brick (I often run 10km in and out of work with it in my backpack) then I would say this is the laptop for you.
