Product Description It's hard to believe that a notebook so slim can pack a potent processing punch, but that's exactly what the ASUS UL80Jt does. This is thanks to groundbreaking ASUS Turbo33, which works in tandem with Intel Turbo Boost Technology to enhance system performance by up to 33% - making light work of demanding tasks such as video playback. Only ASUS Turbo33 is able to unleash the full power of 1066MHz RAM, leaving competing notebooks - which are limited to 800MHz performance - in its dust. When going full-bore isn't necessary, Turbo33 can be disabled with a simple press of a dedicated button. This added flexibility is made even better by the new generation of Intel Core processors, now featured in the new UL80Jt. | Customer Reviews: Best Then & Light Period September 1, 2010 Woody Okay so before you blow this off as a bias review for any reason, I'll preface my review by mentioning I've worked as a sales associate at a large electronics store for quite some time. That being said, I've seen many, many laptops come and go and, point blank, this IS the best LAPTOP (not workstation) I've seen to date.
PROS: -Easily FEELS 10X faster than any Atom laptop/nettop's
-Battery life equal if not better than ALL atom laptop/nettop's
-The perfect size for everything, if your thinking smaller, unless it has to fit into a purse, you'll regret everything (tiny keyboard, poor key spacing, and mostly the screen) If you're thinking bigger, you won't enjoy lugging it around after too long, I guarantee.
-Thanks in most part to the culmination of ASUS's overclocking of an intel's ULV i3 CPU and nVidia's pretty well refined hybrid graphics ("Optimus") This is the absolute best Price/Portability/Performance you'll find by any laptop manufacture at this moment, sorry Apple fans, time for a good refresh.
-My personal pet peeve of all time, the Keyboard, It's perfect, just take my word on this one.
-Warranty: GREAT warranty out of the box, 24 month everything, 12 month accidental (If purchased just about anywhere except Best Buy)
-Last but not least, the graphics are great for everything 2D!
CONS: -BLOATWARE SUCKS!!!!! (you're stuck either formatting right after unboxing your bran new laptop and loose all the neat tools and drivers, or you have to spend hours uninstalling all the garbage kindly pre-installed)
-Hard drive is slow as DIRT! An SSD would be incredible but simply isn't going to happen at this price, at least not anywhere near the capacity. Intel's 3rd gen SSD's should be a step in the right direction, but SSD's simply won't be at this kind of great price/portability/performance point for a few more generations.
-And last but not least for the cons, the graphics! Useless for almost anything 3D!
Summary: Simply put, if you're in the market for a laptop with better battery life than just about anything else and "good enough" performance for almost everything, stop looking any further and buy this. You'll be glad you did.
Decent, lightweight laptop but has some glaring issues... August 7, 2010 Geekcheck 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
I recently purchased the UL80JT after waiting 6 months from it's initial announcement in January. This laptop seemingly had everything I was looking for in a laptop: lightweight construction, long battery life, portability, and Nvidia Optimus technology. After using it for a about a week and some internet investigation, I have found the problems I am experiencing are far too common.
First the laptop has some minor keyboard flex. Now while it is much better than it's predecessor the UL80VT, it is still noticeable in the same areas, albeit more sturdy. Nonetheless, it is an area that still needs to be addressed.
Second, the Core i3-330UM is powerful enough for most office apps and even Photoshop, but has some issues with other more taxing programs as well as multitasking. As an IS major, this is something that can be very limiting depending on the work I am doing. The UM series is basically the next generation of the ULV processor and while sufficient for some things like HD playback (720/1080p), office apps, and even light gaming (Torchlight plays well, but Fallout 3 will not), it starts to struggle the more programs you have open.
Thirdly and most important, is that there seems to be a physical defect with the motherboard. There is a VERY noticeable CPU whine, when the computer is either plugged in or on battery power. At first I didn't hear it, but then when I finally started using the laptop for daily purposes, it was readily apparent. The noise is most audible when you are running ANY program. Simply opening a web browser will trigger it and it becomes highly distracting and annoying after a few minutes. After careful investigation I have found that this problem is most likely caused by a faulty inductor on the motherboard that deals with the Intel GMA chipset. In addition to this, the problem is not just relegated to the UL80JT, but even some of the higher-end models. It is because of this issue that I am returning the UL80JT and purchasing something differently entirely.
I can deal with the keyboard flex and the Core i3-330UM, but when there is a physical problem with the product such as this, it is a purchase I cannot justify. With the economy the way it is, I am more cautious of where my funds are spent and this is something that I cannot accept. I expected more form Asus and a problem such as this should have been caught during the Quality Control. I gave this product 3 stars because overall it is a decent machine and good for people who want a good all-around laptop. But this particular physical defect is a dealbreaker and should be for anyone paying over $800 for a product.
