Jump Lists
New in Windows 7, Jump Lists take you right to the documents, pictures, songs, or websites you turn to each day. To open a Jump List, just right-click a program icon on the Windows 7 taskbar. (You'll also find them on the Start menu.) What you see in a Jump List depends entirely on the program. The Jump List for Internet Explorer 8 shows frequently-viewed websites. Windows Media Player 12 lists commonly-played tunes. Your Jump List missing a favorite? You can "pin" whatever files you like there. Jump Lists don't just show shortcuts to files. Sometimes they also provide quick access to commands for things like composing new e‑mail messages or playing music.

Improved Windows Taskbar
In Windows 7 you can "pin" favorite programs anywhere on the taskbar for easy access. Not crazy about the icon lineup? Now you can rearrange them any way you like by clicking and dragging. Finally, there are new ways to preview windows. Point to a taskbar icon to see a thumbnail preview of open files or programs. Then, move your mouse over a thumbnail to preview the window full-screen. You can even close windows from the thumbnail previews--a big time saver.

Snap
Ever need to cut through a cluttered desktop and quickly focus on a single window? Just click a pane and give your mouse a shake. Every open window except that one instantly disappears. Jiggle again--and your windows are back.

4 out of 5 stars decent buy   June 28, 2010

I have had this laptop for about 3 months and am pretty happy overall. It is lightweight and compact with excellent battery life. The touch pad is in an awkward spot and it is slightly difficult to type while avoiding tapping the pad with the heel of your hand. It is a shame that the keyboard isn't lighted, and the power outlet is on the right, which seems odd. Overall, I am very happy with the laptop.

2 out of 5 stars I HATE THIS LAPTOP   May 12, 2010

First off let me say that I have been a loyal Dell buyer, this laptop was my third Dell. Now, I hate this 1470 Dell Laptop. I only had it five mos when the hard drive went. After two hours (no exaggeration) on the phone with their nice but inept tech, he finally agreed that the hd was defective. They sent me a replacement hd to install. I called them for help installing it, as instructed. The tech I got this time was extremely difficult to understand, after numerous "what" I did as instructed. But the instructions were wrong, so he said to return the laptop and replacement hd to Dell and they would repair it. OKAY, I was in agreement.
Two weeks later I get the laptop back, it had not been shut down properly, the computer would not reboot, and another 45minutes of frustration with Dell. I finally got it working, but they insist it was not repaired. Phone calls kept coming from them (one at midnight) asking me if the replacement hd had arrived. In frustration I stopped picking up their calls. Now I am getting letters asking why I didn't send the defective hd back. I tried calling them to explain that I didn't take the hd that was defective out of the computer when I returned the laptop for repair so they have it, but the woman did not understand what I was saying. So she then told me not to worry about it. Again, in frustration I have written a letter to them explaining the whole process I went through.
Back to the laptop, it is irratic. I will be typing and the cursor will jump around causing me to lose my information. I have tried everything to no avail. I would have given it one star except the quality of the screen is good.
Would I recommend this laptop: NO NO NO. And, customer service is plain awful to deal with. Do not buy this laptop.

1 out of 5 stars Defective Speakers   March 19, 2010

As a full-time grad student with a full-time job and 2.5-hour round-trip commute, I needed a laptop asap for my schoolwork. After thoroughly trolling the Internet and comparing specs and prices, this system seemed to be the best compromise between specs and cost. I previously had a Dell laptop and, despite minor quirks, it was a decent system. I was willing to buy another Dell.

I placed the order, and I purchased next-day delivery.

The system arrived by noon the following day, and I immediately unpacked it and began to charge the battery and investigate features.

Pros:
-- attractive
-- quiet
-- software installation disks included (call me old-school; I want tangible backup)
-- solid feel to the keyboard
-- nifty multi-touch touchpad

Cons:
-- no latch to close system (it just seemed somehow less sturdy without the latch)
-- there was no express card/34 slot, contrary to the specs listed on Amazon
-- **speakers completely and spontaneously blew out 10 minutes after I turned on the system** (it began with static and crackling noise that escalated in volume until, finally, there was no sound and Windows would not detect any audio output hardware)**

I immediately called Amazon customer service, explained the situation, and requested a full refund. The representative was extremely sympathetic and automatically agreed to e-mail return shipping labels to me and agreed to provide a full refund, including all initial shipping charges. Amazon customer service was stellar, as all reports indicated it would be.

I realize that the problem was most likely from defective components provided to Dell, but I don't have time to hope an exchange would be trouble-free; I'm buying a Sony Vaio.

Good luck.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best Dell laptop I had   March 19, 2010

Pros: great display, pretty fast, Win 7 is not so bad.
Cons: keyboard double typing letters - known problem with many Del XPS and now Inspirion. I had to change keyboard 3 times and now its somewhat ok. Meaning I still every once in awhile get the double letter typed.

Those folks out there who get "blue screen of death" - call Dell support, or go on Chat with them. I upgraded video drivers and that totally fixed that problem for me (also updated BIOS, but that was not the solution for blue screen").

Overall I like this laptop. I wish I did not have to do all this work to get it to the right state. Because now I think, what else is going to break?

1 out of 5 stars It died   March 16, 2010

It died on the 30th day I owned it. Dell says it is covered under warranty, but the point is my brand new computer is a $500+ paper weight and I have the inconvienence of having to borrow a computer until the they get around to sending mine back...is there a lemon law for computers?
